Maybe they make defensive maneuvers, maybe you order a pincer formation, or you capture an enemy combatant and interrogate them, discovering a key strategic weakness that you can exploit. You start a battle, and then you get a series of choices for your General/Admiral, where you bark out commands to your soldiers/pilots as a text adventure unfurls. Something similar could happen in Stellaris. It's a little thing, but it makes the game more interesting.
There's dice rolls based on stats, and you get various bonuses/penalties/injuries based on the choices you make. Basically, partway through the battle, you get an event that appears on screen that adds some text options as your commander enters a duel with the enemy commander.
